When Sportrock approached us with the idea of creating short videos about their community, we all agreed: this wasn’t about promotion. It was about people. Instead of branding or facility tours, we wanted to focus on personal stories — the kind of narratives that climbers would recognize and feel connected to.
Shayna was the first person highlighted through Sportrock’s community nomination process, and her story set the tone for everything that followed. She spoke about her evolution as a climber, the balance between fun and challenge, and the unspoken bonds formed on the wall. Her voice captured exactly what we hoped this series would embody: an invitation into the spirit of the gym, without needing to spell it out.
We kept our interview light and conversational, guiding it toward moments of reflection and joy. Climbing itself was front and center, but so was the broader sense of belonging — what it means to show up, push yourself when you’re ready, and feel supported whether you top out or not. Our edit leaned into that feeling, combining stylized motion, energetic pacing, and rich climbing visuals to reflect Shayna’s dynamism and the community around her.
As the pilot for the series, Shayna’s piece needed to strike the right balance: personal but accessible, community-rooted but visually distinct. We brought a graphic-forward editing style to the piece, introducing motion elements that gave it a signature look and feel — one that could grow with the series, but also stand alone.
Once released, the video quickly gained traction among Sportrock members. It was shared widely, commented on actively, and set the expectation that these weren’t just gym videos — they were short stories worth watching. The response was strong enough that the project, initially scoped for three videos, expanded to four.
